Electrical Drafter

Position Details:

Electrical Drafter

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Drafter to join our growing team. In this role, you will work closely with engineers, designers, project managers, and field personnel to prepare accurate, high-quality electrical drawings and construction packages for utility and infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will have strong drafting skills, experience working with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, and the ability to interpret engineering designs, survey information, redlines, and technical documentation. This role will support the development and revision of electrical distribution designs from initial drafting through Issued for Review (IFR), Issued for Construction (IFC), and as-built documentation.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, project managers, field personnel, and other project stakeholders to support the successful delivery of electrical distribution and utility projects.
  • Prepare, revise, and maintain engineering drawings and design documentation
  • Review survey information, field data, engineering markups, redlines, and other technical information to ensure drawings are complete and accurate.
  • Develop electrical and utility drawings in accordance with established engineering designs, client requirements, utility standards, municipal requirements, and company drafting standards.
  • Prepare and update overhead and underground electrical distribution drawings and associated construction documentation.
  • Prepare complete drawing packages and supporting documentation for Issued for Review (IFR) and Issued for Construction (IFC) submissions.
  • Incorporate design revisions, client comments, field changes, and redlines into drawings accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate as-built drawings and records based on construction and field information.
  • Support engineers and designers with technical calculations, drawing development, design revisions, and other project requirements as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation and coordination of permits, line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, municipal approvals, and other project-specific documentation as required.
  • Identify discrepancies, missing information, potential conflicts, and constructability concerns within drawings and communicate them to the appropriate engineer, designer, or project manager.
  • Perform drawing checks and quality-control reviews to ensure drawings are accurate, complete, consistent, and compliant with applicable standards and project requirements.
  • Maintain organized project files, drawing revisions, document control records, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple drafting assignments and project deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and quality.
  • Participate in internal project meetings and coordinate with project team members to address drawing requirements, revisions, and outstanding information.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to drafting standards, templates, workflows, quality, and project delivery.
  • Follow and promote all applicable health and safety policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or certificate in Electrical Engineering Technology, Engineering Design and Drafting Technology, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
  • 3–5 years of relevant drafting experience, preferably within electrical utility, telecommunications, infrastructure, or a related industry.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with MicroStation is strongly preferred.
  • Experience preparing and revising engineering drawings, construction drawings, and design packages in accordance with established standards and specifications.
  • Experience with overhead and underground electrical distribution systems is considered a strong asset.
  • Ability to interpret engineering designs, survey information, construction drawings, redlines, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Experience preparing Issued for Review (IFR), Issued for Construction (IFC), and as-built drawings is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of drafting standards, drawing organization, layer management, file management, revision control, and document control practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to produce accurate, consistent, and high-quality technical drawings.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, designers, project managers, field personnel, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify drawing discrepancies, incomplete information, and potential design conflicts.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of Canadian utility standards, municipal requirements, electrical distribution construction practices, and applicable industry standards is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience working with Canadian utility providers and/or municipalities is considered an asset.
  • Commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and safe work practices.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with an acceptable driving record is considered an asset.
